Around the world languish a number of long-forgotten raceways; windswept and abandoned, the derelict pit roads and crumbling concrete are all that remain of once great race tracks. From the NASCAR heartland of North Wilkesboro and Middle Georgia to the great European super speedways at Monza and Brooklands, these faded circuits are now monuments to the victories, defeats, triumphs and tragedies once played out before excited crowds.
With roots as diverse as Nationalist Socialism and Prohibition-era bootlegging, the histories of these places offer an insight to different times and attitudes, as well as the evolution of motor racing. Many of the characters who raced on these circuits had a profound impact on their sport; these circuits, which fostered and occasionally destroyed such great drivers, are revisited here – photographed as they are now, but also remembered in their prime by word and picture.
With over 175 images, this a unique and evocative look at some of auto racing’s ghost tracks.
Note that some of these circuits featured in the much acclaimed Autodrome – The lost race circuits of Europe, but in this edition are illustrated by many new photographs.

Speedway Auto racing ghost tracks SS Collins Gavin Ireland eBook
This book is a follow up to the fantastic book Autodrome. Autodrome described some of the retired racing circuits in Europe with a combination of history and photography. In this new volume of stories and photographs of former auto racing tracks, coverage spans both North America and Europe. In fact, some of the circuits described in Speeday are duplicates of those in Autodrome. Some of the new tracks covered in Speedway include Chicago, Augusta, Middle Georgia, and North Wilkesboro. Returnees include Avus, Brooklands, Monza, and Montlhéry.
While Autodrome was quite enjoyable, Speedway is a bit of a letdown. Both the photography and track selection for the North America circuits are somewhat poor. Furthermore, rounding out the book with a bunch of the same tracks (albeit with some new photos) from Autodrome seems like a cheap trick. Surely the authors could have found more worth tracks to include like Marlboro Motor Raceway, Riverside, and others?
If you already have Autodrome, then I'd say skip this volume.

Speedway Auto racing ghost tracks SS Collins Gavin Ireland eBook Reviews
A wonderfully illustrated book, but the description doesn't tell you that it is a history book as well. Lots of color.
Very nice book. Learned about some places I never heard of. Nice pics too. Just wish it was longer!
Missing a few significant tracks and speedways of the past. What is there is fine - its just short on content.
Great book
Great book with photography that's detailed and haunting. Great information on tracks that should still be thrilling audiences but sadly are gone forever. A book that glorifies some very famous and forgotten race tracks you wonder what happened to.
